100 Faces – #85 Confidence

Throughout this series of drawings, I have cycled back to classical herma as inspiration and this is another example.  I wanted to play with a composition that was a slightly diagonal column which is how this drawing arose, the top of the column forming a sort of stacked pillar or hair and the bottom part of the column acting as a suggestion of a neck and torso.  My husband commented when this was at the sketch stage that she reminded him of Grace Jones, no doubt largely because of that pillar of hair but perhaps also because of the theatricality.  To me the thing that Grace Jones always exudes is supreme self-confidence so that gave me not only the title for this illustration but also the choice to use bold, saturated red.
