I am participating in Inktober this year. Inktober is an annual challenge, founded by Jake Parker, to create something with ink every day of October. Last year was my first year and I really enjoyed drawing every day, even though some days it was hard even to find 20 minutes in which to put pen to paper*. While I will be drawing daily, I may not get the time to blog every day. There may be some catch up posts required. I will be aiming to post to my Instagram account daily though so you can follow along with my progress there if you like. I like to work small for Inktober as it makes the whole thing seem more manageable. I, therefore, picked up a set of small Fabriano EcoQua blank notebooks. It was a bit of a gamble but I have found that the paper is fountain pen friendly with no feathering and little bleed through. Yay!
While last year I just drew whatever (usually creepy) subjects came to mind, this year I am working to a theme. My kids decided my theme should be Harry Potter and they will be giving me daily prompts. I discovered that my chosen notebook has 30 pages. As there are 31 days in October, that necessitates me starting a second notebook. That will make me twitchy so inevitably – just as happened last year – I will end up doing more than 31 Inktober drawings. Of course, I don’t have to commit to them being daily after October ends. Anyway, first up in the Harry Potter Inktober drawing challenge had to be Harry Potter, of course. His proportions are crazy but that is OK.
*You can see my drawings from Inktober 2016 over on my other blog, A Pict in PA.

I am participating in Inktober again this year and my theme is Harry Potter. This year I am going to share my daily drawings over on my other blog, Pict Ink, and on Instagram. Visit or follow along on either of those if you want to see what I create during this challenge. Thanks!

I always draw heads bigger than bodies, so I actually prefer it that way. Neat!

I’m actually not that bothered by inaccurate proportions. It would bother me more to cut off the feet or the top of the head. I sometimes draw from the bottom up so chopping off heads can be a real risk. With these Harry Potter characters, I’m sketching in stick men in pencil before I go in with the ink and I am starting with the heads. I guess that’s why the heads end up being big.

I’d never even considered drawing from the bottom up! That sounds hard.

It’s probably not the most sensible thing to do but sometimes it just seems right to start that way.
