Star Wars #111 – Lanai and Porg

This illustration depicts two species that are native to the island of Ahch-To.  Both the Lanai and porg populations were probably living blissfully quiet lives until Luke Skywalker turned up to turn it into his hermit resort.  Their peace only got more disrupted when Chewbacca and Rey pitched up.  I have never drawn either before.

The Lanai are somewhat amphibian like and somewhat bird like.  They appear to function as caretakers of the island temple so they look a little bit housekeeper and a little bit nun.  I had fun creating the colour and texture of the skin.  You would think porgs would be easy to draw because they are basically dumpling puffins but I had a really hard time getting the porg to look adorable.  I probably erased my guidelines for that drawing more than I have erased anything in this Star Wars challenge so far.

Star Wars #73 – Rey on Ahch-To

This is my second time drawing Rey in this Star Wars illustration challenge and, by coincidence, the prompts are coming up in sequel trilogy order: the first drawing depicted her in ‘The Force Awakens’ and this second drawing depicts her in a scene from ‘The Last Jedi’.  As you can see, I’ve still not learned the lesson of using a ruler to draw that staff.  Although it is still not an accurate portrait, I do think I have done a better job of drawing Rey’s face this time.  I have drawn her at the moment that she arrives on Ahch-To and reaches out to hand Lukehis lightsaber.  I thought it would challenge me to tackle the foreshortening of her arm.  I definitely fudged that.  I get away with it because my drawing style is wonky.

Star Wars #38 – Snoke

Snoke’s official job title is Supreme Leader but he’s one of many villains in the sequel trilogy.  Here is my take on Snoke: great character design and mo-cap performance but dreadful character with zero substance or arc.  So, yes, not a big fan of the character but I loved drawing his gnarly face.  Lots of line work and twisty, weird shapes.  Also, the dude is a natty dresser so I really enjoyed drawing his golden robes.  It has not photographed well but that beige-looking colour is actually gold watercolour.

Star Wars #32 – Vice Admiral Holdo

Amilyn Holdo is a character introduced in ‘The Last Jedi’.  She is a Vice Admiral in the Resistance and, while initially she seems like she may be an antagonist to some of the hero characters,  ultimately she heroically sacrifices herself in order to destroy an enemy ship and allow her colleagues to escape.  Holdo is tall and slender and, while I didn’t get those proportions quite right, I liked drawing the long lines of her costume.  I also enjoyed mixing the violet of her hair and the mauve of her gown.

Star Wars #16 – Rose Tico

One of my peeves with ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ is the sidelining of Rose’s character.  It seems ridiculous to create a character and set her off on an arc only to make her peripheral in the final movie of the trilogy.  Anyway, this is the first time I have ever drawn Rose.  I decided to draw her as we first meet her in the movie, wearing a boiler suit and being assertive when encountering a potential deserter.  I had fun drawing the crossed arm pose and all the wrinkles in the fabric of her boiler suit.
